According to press release, Big River Steel in northeast Arkansas is investing $1.2 billion in an expansion that will add 500 additional employees to the current 541 employees. The project expands its LEED-certified scrap recycling and steel production facility. Construction will begin in late 2018 and continue for 24 months. Engineering efforts are already underway with SMS group GmbH, the primary technology provider, according to the press release.

The investment will expand Big River Steel’s hot-rolled steel production capacity to 3.3 million tons annually.

The Arkansas Economic Development Commission said Big River Steel will receive a recycling equipment tax credit for the expansion.

Big River Steel invested $1.3 billion to build and start up the world’s first Flex Mill and began operating in early 2017.
