During the first quarter of 2010, Xinjiang-based Chinese steel producer Bayi Steel, a subsidiary of Shanghai-based Baosteel Group, sold a total of 1.4 million mt of finished steel products, which constitutes a record high quarterly sales volume for the company. During the quarter in question, Bayi Steel won orders for some important projects such as the construction of the Gansu Guazhou wind power base and also supplied products to various fields such as railways, highway construction, water and electricity, real estate, airport construction, petrochemicals, and others.
China is currently putting much emphasis on development in the west of the country, and the northwestern region of Xinjiang, a main focus for this development, has gradually been attracting the attention of many leading Chinese steel producers. Bayi Steel faces great challenges at present since many other steel producers have established or expanded their networks in Xinjiang, trying to increase their market shares with low prices.
