Chongqing-based Chinese automaker Changan Automobile Co. and Chinese steel giant Baosteel Group have established a joint auto steel laboratory to carry out research and development on auto steel products, as announced by Baosteel Group on December 5. The new laboratory is expected to boost Changan Auto's competitiveness.

Since the start of their long-term strategic cooperation in November 2009, Baosteel has supplied more than one million mt of high-quality steel plates to Changan Auto, while the two sides have cooperated on issues such as automobile weight reduction and high-strength steel application, among others.

Meanwhile, R5 grade marine mooring chain steel with diameter of 500 mm produced by Baosteel Special Steel Business Unit has been approved by Norwegian-based classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV), with Baosteel Special Steel being the first company to produce this product in China.
