Baosteel and CVRD consider to construct slab mill

Chinese Shanghai based steel maker Baosteel and Brazilian iron ore producer Companhia Vale do Rio Doce SA (CVRD) are considering to construct a slab mill in northeast Brazil, probably near Ponta da Maderia port in Maranhao. According to reports, feasibility studies in this respect are carried out. Currently, two companies are in talk of deciding the plant's capacity. The foreseen annual capacity could exceed 3.5 million tons. The iron ore will be supplied from CVRD's iron ore mine in Carajas northern Brazil while the slabs will be exported by Baosteel. Baosteel and CVRD also have a partnership in Baovale mining company. This company provides iron ore to Baosteel from CVRD's southern mining system in Brazil.
