Australia’s Newcastle port sees increased coal exports

In the week ended December 17, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 3.27 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 20.2 percent compared to the 2.7 million mt of coal shipments recorded in the previous week, following a week-on-week decrease of 2.7 percent recorded in the week ended December 10.

In the period December 1-17, Newcastle port exported 6.7 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority has forecast that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.35 million mt for the whole of December.

Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
