Assofermet: Good demand and higher quotations in Italian scrap market

In November, there was good demand in both the Italian and international scrap markets, with higher quotations.

December has started with low inventories of raw materials in the Italian steel industry and with strong domestic demand for scrap, accompanied by increased quotations, especially for high quality scrap.

In December, due to the holidays and the bad weather conditions, local trade in the European region is expected to be mainly directed towards meeting essential needs for scrap.

An upward trend is seen in all markets, with significant purchase offers from emerging countries for shipments in January. Thus, good demand for raw materials for the steel industry is expected for early 2011.

In November, shipments of 92,500 mt of pig iron and about 16,000 mt of scrap were reported at Marghera port (near Venice) - with 525,600 mt and 310,700 mt respectively at Marghera during the first 11 months of the current year.
