Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced that through its Steligence® platform and ArcelorMittal International it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Australia-based Stockland, alongside partner JSteel, to promote sustainable steel solutions in construction projects.

The partnership aims to develop engineered and tailored steel solutions for Stockland’s logistics and property developments, with a focus on reducing Scope 3 emissions associated with construction materials.

The companies will provide commercial and logistical support to integrate low-carbon steel into projects, addressing the challenge of embodied carbon in the built environment.

XCarb® steel to play central role

The agreement includes the use of ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, which is manufactured via electric arc furnace (EAF) technology using recycled scrap and renewable electricity.

According to the company, XCarb® products can deliver around 87 percent lower embodied carbon emissions compared to conventional blast furnace-based steelmaking.

Focus on logistics and infrastructure projects

The initiative is particularly relevant for logistics developments, where structural steel is a key component and a major contributor to overall project emissions.

By integrating low-carbon steel, the partners aim to support sustainability targets and accelerate progress toward net-zero construction.

Industry shift toward low-emission materials

ArcelorMittal stated that innovations such as EAF-based production and renewable energy sourcing are reshaping the steel industry and enabling significant emission reductions.

The collaboration with Stockland reflects growing demand for sustainable building materials and the increasing importance of reducing carbon footprints across the construction value chain.
