Canada-based ArcelorMittal Dofasco has decommissioned its No. 3 coke plant, with final production completed on April 13, 2026, marking a key milestone in its decarbonization strategy.

The shutdown was first announced in 2021 as part of the company’s broader plan to reduce emissions and environmental impact.

Environmental benefits expected

The closure is expected to deliver measurable improvements in environmental performance, including reductions in visible emissions and harmful substances such as benzene and benzo(a)pyrene. These changes are expected to benefit overall air quality.

According to the company, all affected employees are being reassigned to other positions within the facility, supported by individualized transition plans.

Continued coke production at remaining facility

Following the closure, ArcelorMittal Dofasco will continue operating its No. 2 coke plant. Coke remains a critical input in the blast furnace process for producing liquid iron, underlining the importance of maintaining operational balance during the transition.

President and CEO Ron Bedard noted that the closure reflects the company’s long-term commitment to decarbonization while continuing to support domestic steel production and employment.
