Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced that it has partnered with Japan-based Sekisui Chemicals on a project called NEDO to capture and reuse carbon from steelmaking.

The companies have achieved a carbon conversion rate of 90 percent and a hydrogen conversion rate of 75 percent using blast furnace gas at ArcelorMittal’s Asturias plant in Spain, higher than the projected target of 85 percent for carbon conversion and 60 percent for hydrogen conversion.

In addition to the NEDO project, the companies aim to commercialize carbon capture and using technology by launching a new project.
