The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) issued a statement expressing its endorsement of and appreciation for 36 members of the House Steel Caucus who issued a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressing their strong support for quick passage of a full surface transportation reauthorization bill.

Following is the statement, by Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI:

"The steel industry thanks Congressmen Pete Visclosky (D-IN) and Tim Murphy (R-PA) for their leadership in bringing together a bi-partisan group of members of the House Steel Caucus to sign onto the letter to Speaker Pelosi. We also want to thank all those who signed onto the letter for their support for quick passage of a surface transportation reauthorization bill. As their letter states, passage of this bill would help grow jobs and aid in our nation's economic recovery.

Congress needs to move with a sense of urgency to get a full bill passed, as opposed to providing a long-term extension. In order to maintain its position as a global leader, the US must upgrade its crumbling infrastructure sooner rather than later. We as an industry support providing an adequate level of funding in the reauthorization for all federal infrastructure needs to ensure the US has an effective and efficient infrastructure system."
