Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) is expected to gradually start up the three natural gas-run energy facilities it’s currently developing by the next few years, as the company expects to supply electricity to its steel activities and reduce costs, according to media reports.
While using electricity to supply its steel activities, AHMSA is also expected to reap the benefits of the investment, as the exceeding amount of electricity generated at the three facilities will be sold.
Two of the three energy facilities are located in the Coahuila region, with a combined 99 MW capacity, while the third facility is located in the area of Hidalgo, with a capacity of up to 50 MW.
AHMSA’s first energy equipment will start producing electricity in the beginning of 2016, with 1.6 MW of electricity and increasing capacity until it’s fully operational by 2020, at 19.2 MW capacity.
AHMSA’s largest energy facility, with an 80 MW capacity and located in Hidalgo, is expected to be fully operational by 2017.
A third set of the equipment will operate in two phases, the first in H1 2017 and the second in H2 2018.
