Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA), currently idled due to the lack of funds to pay for energy, was reconnected to the electricity service by the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) by order of a judge, according to reports from regional press today.

"CFE restores energy to AHMSA, only Pemex is missing," says the headline of the newspaper El Siglo de Torreon. For its part, the newspaper La Prensa de Coahuila reported that the reconnection took place despite the fact that the steel company maintains debt with the utility.

Citing the words of AHMSA spokesman Francisco Orduna, El Siglo de Torreon published that the reconnection "is an important step for the reactivation of steel production."

At the end of last year and beginning of 2023, the CFE suspended the supply of electricity to AHMSA for an approximate debt of $7.0 million and the state oil company Pemex also suspended the supply of gas. Since then, production has been stopped. According to the newspapers, AHMSA hopes that Pemex will restore the gas supply through a court order.

The steel company is undergoing a financial restructuring process (something similar to Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Law) under an old law already repealed in Mexico.
