On June 5, a truck carrying explosives blew up near the entrance of Sishanling iron ore mine in Benxi in China's Liaoning Province. The mine is owned by Jilin Province-based Huamei Group, a subsidiary of China National Coal Group Co..

The blast took place when miners were dropping explosives down a one km-deep mine shaft, destroying the pit's hoisting system, according to local media.

Rescuers pulled 23 workers out of the mine, hours after they were trapped underground by the blast, while 11 workers were killed, with two others still missing.
