As expected, US scrap prices in the Ohio Valley have settled up by approximately $30/gt ($30/mt) across the board. Sources have also confirmed that Chicago and Detroit have also settled up by $30/gt ($30/mt).
“When things started earlier in the week, we kind of figured that up $30/gt would be in the bag,” a source said. “Scrap is still tight and there are some yards that still owe material that was booked in November.”
Another source agreed.
“Part of this is tight supply, part of it is compressed shipping times with the holidays,” the source said. “No one should be surprised by higher prices this month.”
Scrap in the Southern US is still trading, sources note, adding that some grades are expected to settle at up $40/gt ($41/mt).
“Shredded scrap in parts of Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia is trading at up $40/gt,” another source said.
