The leading Japanese EAF-based steel producer Tokyo Steel has increased its local shindachi scrap purchase price at its Tokyo Bay yard. The appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar has helped keep H2 grade prices stable, though the expected price increase in the international scrap segment has led the producer to increase shindachi prices in the Tokyo Bay area.
The general price range for H2 grade scrap has been kept stable as compared to the levels recorded on March 3 at JPY 45,500-46,500/mt ($289-296/mt) depending on the mill. Including the changes in the exchange rates, the dollar-based quotations have increased by $1/mt.
On the other hand, Tokyo Steel’s shindachi scrap prices have moved up by JPY 2,500/mt on the upper end to the range of JPY 47,000-51,500/mt ($299-327/mt) delivered, up by $1/mt on the lower end and by $16/mt on the upper end on US dollar basis. The prices shared in the table below are effective as of March 6.
