Sharp decline in Turkish ship scrap prices

According to market sources, ship scrap prices in Turkey's Aliaga region - the only region in Turkey where ship scrapping is allowed - have decreased by $12/mt week on week to $224-225/mt ex-yard during the past week. The reason for this price reduction was Turkish producers’ preference of import scrap instead of ship scrap due to significant declines in import scrap prices. Yesterday, September 3, market players were surprised since offers for ex-US HMS I/II 80:20 scrap  decreased to $220.5/mt CFR. Meanwhile, demand for ship scrap has been negatively affected by the increasing of  Turkish lira against the US dollar to above 3.0 level as of today, September 4.
