Prices remains stable in the local Italian scrap market during transition week

This week has been rather quiet in the local Italian scrap market. As it often happens towards the end of the month, market players are taking their time to understand how the following weeks will develop. As a result, no significant changes in local scrap prices have been observed.

Local mills have continued to buy at a regular pace, and most of them share the idea of maintaining unchanged purchase prices for November, waiting to prepare for traditional winter closures.

Several sources on buyers’ side have in fact confirmed that, although there have been some small upward corrections in scrap purchase prices, they have been isolated and negligible in relation to the general market trend.

I don’t believe the market conditions will allow increases in scrap prices. International markets are quiet and the local finished steel market does not give us any margin to do so, a source at a major Italian mill commented. Producers will try to keep [scrap] prices unchanged in November and then decide how to behave in December, which is always a delicate month. I don't see any need to raise prices on our side, a source at another producer in Italy said. We are well stocked and we are not in a hurry to buy.

On the suppliers’ side, some sources have confirmed that they have perceived a possible stability in the next few weeks. Raw material collection is proceeding rather smoothly in relation to a regular - but modest - demand from mills. We are well aware that the sentiment is not quite positive, so we try to work until the end of the year without any particular price manipulation strategy, a source in the Italian scrap market supply side said.

Finally, better market visibility will probably emerge next week at the Ecomondo event, which will be held in Rimini from November 4 to 7, 2025.

As a result, scrap prices in the Italian market have remained overall unchanged this week, at the following levels:
