Local German scrap prices rise in February, March outlook uncertain

Even though the scrap market in Germany has been characterized by some variety in price trends in February, ex-warehouse scrap prices have maintained quite a consistent rise compared to January. According to BDSV, ex-warehouse scrap prices in Germany have increased by slightly more than €10/mt in February.

Mills’ procurement prices in Germany, however, have risen by a range of €10-25/mt, as SteelOrbis previously reported, because “some steel mills had received less material at the beginning of the year than they hoped for and, struggling with low stock levels, they were eager to replenish them”, as one source reported.

Moreover, the complicated weather conditions have slowed down waterway transport, and there was a high risk that scrap quantities in transit could not reach their destinations. These factors also have contributed to the price rise in Germany in February as compared to January.

As for March outlook, the market is not ready to make predictions yet, as mills’ warehouses and their capacity utilizations next month remain uncertain. The widespread hope, however, is that the market will remain stable.

According to BDSV, the increases observed in the first 20 days of February are in the range of €11.2-13.8/mt. On year-on-year basis, scrap prices fell by between €4.3/mt and €15.1/mt.

The prices are provided by Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Stahlrecycling-und Entsorgungsunternehmen e.V. and are average prices for domestic transactions across Germany in the first 20 days of the given month.
