According to the latest figures provided by German steel scrap recycler association (BDSV), during the month of October this year domestic steel scrap prices declined by €28-36/mt. This latest fall has completely erased the upward movement recorded in August and September, when market prices gained about €20/mt. In the month-on-month comparison, the price gap between higher and lower qualities contracted from €57.3/mt to €53.8/mt.
In the month of October as compared to September, the E1 old steel scrap price sank by €32.9/mt or 12.9 percent, while the price of E5 steel turnings fell by €27.9/mt or 12.1 percent. On the other hand, higher scrap qualities such as shredded scrap recorded smaller price reductions.
Compared to October 2011, prices fell by €48/mt or 16.2 percent for new arisings (E2/E8), while lower scrap qualities decreased more slightly (steel turnings were down 10 percent and old steel scrap was down 10.3 percent). The price gap between the most expensive scrap qualities and the cheapest ones shrunk from €72.3/mt to €53.8/mt
