Prices are weakening in the Italian scrap market. According to market players consulted by SteelOrbis, prices could fall another €5/mt ($7/mt) during the coming week, while currently they are positioned as follows:
Quality |
Price (€/mt) |
HMS |
320 ($426/mt) |
Shredded scrap |
335-340 ($446-452/mt) |
Busheling scrap |
335-350 ($446-466/mt) |
Prices are delivered to customer, excluding VAT
Local scrap prices in Italy are falling and the main reason lies in slower steel production. Steel mills have reduced purchases, partly in view of the upcoming Easter holiday stoppages, and partly due to financial reasons. Anyway, market players state these decreases are limited and hopefully short-lived, especially considering the relative lack of material, mainly for the less valuable and less expensive scrap qualities which in recent times have been the most requested.
In conclusion, market players do not forecast big margins of decrease, unless the situation changes on an international level, i.e., if there are significant prices declines in countries such as France and Germany.
