Ex-Australia coking coal stabilizes, but weak demand still weighs on sentiments

A deal for 75,000 mt of mid-volatile Goonyella PHCC has been heard at $221.5/mt FOB for August laycan, which is just $0.5/mt lower than the reference price seen earlier and and slightly below a $223.11/mt FOB deal for low-volatile PHCC done last week.

Some demand has been seen from Southeast Asia and the Far East, while Chinese buyers are ready to deal only at discounts. In particular, the highest tradable level for mid-volatile PHCC has been heard at $230/mt CFR, which is $10/mt below the level seen last week. Demand for import hard coking coal has been even less than that seen for premium materials, while the workable price level stands at $200-205/mt CFR.

Prices for PHCC from Australia have been maintained unchangedmainly owing to sentiments and expectations of some revival of activity from buyers for September laycan. At the same time, there have been no reports of any serious supply disruptions after the accident at BMA late last week.

Also, India has recently imposed definitive antidumping duty on low-ash met coke imported from Australia, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan and China for a period of five years, with the rates in line with the preliminary data. China got the highest rate of $128.83/mt, while Indonesia will have a $67.5/mt duty. This is expected to keep imports of import coking coal in India stable or even support them slightly when the monsoon season finishes.
