Concerns over declining ship breaking activity in Turkey

According to market sources, influenced by the soft trend of import scrap prices, ship scrap prices in Turkey have continued their downward trend. Accordingly, ship scrap prices in Turkey's Aliaga region - the only region in Turkey where ship scrapping is allowed - are currently in the range of $320-330/mt ex-yard. Market sources state that ship breaking activity in the region has slowed down significantly, while capacity utilization rates at Aliaga have declined by 50-60 percent compared to the same period last year, raising strong concerns in the Turkish ship scrap market. The main reason for the limited capacity utilization rates is the stiff competition between the ship scrapping facilities in the Aliaga region and those in Asia and the Far East.
