US import rebar prices soften but interest remains low

Demand for US import rebar is still lackluster as many buyers continue turning to US domestic rebar mills for their orders, and even lower import offer prices have not done much to spur order activity. The seasonal summer slowdown is one factor in the tepid demand, but even when overall rebar activity in the US increases in autumn, sources tell SteelOrbis that they don’t see any “major incentive so far” to place large orders with importers.

This week, US import offers from Algeria and Egypt are around $37.00-$38.00 cwt. ($816-$838/mt or $740-$760/nt) DDP loaded truck in US Gulf ports, compared to $38.00-$39.00 cwt. ($838-$860/mt or $760-$780/nt) DDP loaded truck in US Gulf ports last week. Offers from Mexico, meanwhile, are down $0.50 cwt. ($11/mt or $10/nt) into the range of $41.00-$42.00 cwt. ($904-$926/mt or $820-$840/nt) DDP Houston.
