In the first quarter of this year, Turkey's rebar exports reached 2.28 million mt, showing increase as compared to both the first and last quarters of last year, according to information provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). Thus, Turkey's rebar exports increased by 401,000 mt or by about 29 percent quarter-on-quarter and an increase of 164,000 mt or eight percent was recorded as compared to the first quarter of 2011.

In the first three months of this year, Turkey's top five rebar export markets were Iraq, UAE, USA, Libya and Yemen, with rebar export volume to these markets reaching 1.04 million mt, accounting for 45.5 percent of Turkey's total rebar exports in the mentioned period.

In the first quarter of this year, Iraq became Turkey's number one rebar export market, with the total volume of trade reaching 276,912 mt, mostly due to higher than average rebar prices in the Iraqi market. In the January-March period of this year, Turkey's average rebar sales price to the Iraqi market were at $690-710/mt ex-works and it is reported that rebar demand coming from Iraq is maintaining its strength.

Other main markets for Turkish rebar, namely UAE, US and Yemen continues to remain hot spots for Turkish rebar exporters, while Libya has once again became one of Turkey's major rebar export markets, after the political upheaval last year, with its total rebar imports from Turkey amounting to 151,511 mt in the January-March period of this year.
