The European longs market has been bullish this week, and the effects of the Tube&Wire 2026 fair that took place in Düsseldorf from April 13-17 have begun to be clear.
With a stable demand at low levels both in local and export markets, price increases – if present – have been mostly driven by higher production costs and a structural shortage of material, especially in the wire rod segment.
In the rebar segment, prices in Italy have been reported at €430-440/mt ex-works base (€690-700/mt ex-works), up by about €10/mt in the upper end of the range compared to the values reported last week by SteelOrbis. "The increase is exaggerated, but it is what it is. The limited volumes and the fear of a possible future collapse create concern in all customers. If [producers] had continued to ask for €350-360[/mt ex-works base, €610-620/mt ex-works], perhaps sales would have been more continuous. The ones who need to buy today are suffering for these higher levels”, an Italian trader commented.
In Germany, rebar prices have been reported at higher levels. "Customers are starting to believe in price increases and they are buying, although I know that some mills are still delivering material at old prices," a source commented, adding: "I don't know how long this strategy will last, but certainly the fair has had its effects on prices." To date, rebar deals in the German market have been reported at around €680/mt delivered, while for rebars in coils the level is around €720/mt delivered.
In Poland, rebar prices are also experiencing gradual hikes, although the level of demand is "stable and disappointing", a Polish source said. According to another source, "the only driver would be the lack of material, especially wire rod, which is driving the increases". In Poland, mills are asking around €700/mt delivered for rebar, but the workable price seems to be at around €680/mt delivered.
In the wire rod segment, the few deals concluded have also been reported at higher levels. Prices in the Italian market are experiencing an upward trend, but the new levels of €700-710/mt delivered for drawing quality wire rod have not yet been accepted by the market. On the contrary, in the German and Polish markets, the new prices for mesh quality wire rod have been reported at €700/mt delivered and €695/mt delivered, respectively, but with limited sales volumes.
As for exports, no significant changes have been reported, and in particular FOB offers from Italy are absent. According to a source, numerous requests for the purchase of rebar from Eastern Europe have arrived, but "a price level has not yet been defined".
In the import market, Turkish rebar and wire rod prices have been reported at around €555-565/mt CFR and €565-570/mt CFR respectively, increasing by around €5/mt in the upper end of the range week on week. As for Egyptian material, prices for rebar and wire rod have been observed at the same ex-Turkey levels.
