Romanian rebar market firms up amid higher import offers, cost pressure, better activity

Romanian rebar prices in the spot market have continued to increase in the past week, supported by higher import offer levels, while demand has shown a moderate improvement. Ahead of the Easter holiday period, buyers have become slightly more active, aiming to secure volumes amid expectations of further price increases. The upward trend has been mainly driven by rising costs across the European market, with higher scrap prices also contributing and supporting upward revisions in offers. In the local market, declining stock levels have continued to underpin buying interest, leading Romanian buyers to focus more on import offers and remain open to new bookings. However, no notable changes have been observed in the wire rod segment, while the sole domestic rebar producer has maintained its prices. Despite the improved sentiment, no fresh transactions have been confirmed so far.

As a result, Romanian spot rebar prices have increased to €610-620/mt ex-warehouse, up from €600-615/mt in the previous week. The domestic producer has maintained its latest indications at €590-595/mt ex-works, while higher price ideas of €600-605/mt ex-works continue to be tested, though not yet confirmed. Meanwhile, in the wire rod segment, offer levels have remained stable over the past week at €620-630/mt ex-warehouse, with limited stock availability still being reported.

In the import market, buying interest and low stock levels have persisted; however, no new deals have been reported so far. Offer levels have generally followed an upward trend, although some suppliers have kept prices stable. According to market sources, a Bulgarian supplier, which recently concluded sales to Romania, has maintained its rebar offers at €630-640/mt CPT. At the same time, Greek suppliers have increased their offers to €655/mt CFR for rebar and €650/mt CFR for wire rod, up from previously reported deals, including wire rod sales at €620/mt FCA.

On the other hand, no purchases have been heard from non-EU suppliers. An Egyptian mill has kept its April shipment offers unchanged, with rebar quoted at €555-560/mt CFR and wire rod at €565-570/mt CFR. In contrast, Turkish suppliers have continued to raise their rebar offers to €545-560/mt CFR, compared to €535-550/mt in the previous period, based on an exchange rate of €1 = $1.15 and estimated freight costs of €25-30/mt.
