Romanian longs prices stable, upward sentiment persists despite limited demand

Although Romanian longs prices have mostly remained stable this week, the upward sentiment seen in recent weeks continues to shape the market outlook. Despite still limited demand, the market maintains a relatively firm tone, supported by stronger European pricing, firmer scrap trends and the ongoing impact of CBAM- and quota-related restrictions, which continue to limit competitive import pressure. Trading activity remains largely focused on short-term requirements, with buyers staying cautious but still active to some extent. At the same time, Romania’s sole domestic rebar producer has also started to test higher price levels, reflecting the firmer market mood. Nevertheless, many market participants believe the recent upward movement is progressing faster than actual demand conditions currently justify.

As a result, rebar prices in the Romanian spot market have largely remained stable this week at €625-640/mt ex-warehouse. In the wire rod segment, offers are meanwhile still heard at €660-680/mt ex-warehouse, maintaining the relatively firm levels reached in recent weeks.

On the production side, Romania’s sole domestic rebar producer, Beltrame, has also started to reflect the firmer market direction, with new rebar price indications announced at €630-640/mt ex-works.

In the import segment, Romanian buyers continue to show interest in foreign material, though actual purchasing activity remains relatively cautious amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding CBAM-related costs and quota availability. While demand has not disappeared from the market, most buyers are still reluctant to make aggressive forward bookings, resulting in a generally stable pricing environment on the EU suppliers' side. Under these conditions, Bulgarian rebar offers to Romania have remained at €655-670/mt CPT, while Greek suppliers continue to offer rebar at around €660-665/mt CFR and wire rod at €655-660/mt CFR.

In the non-EU import segment, Egyptian suppliers have increased their June shipment offers to €550-560/mt CFR for rebar and €555-570/mt CFR for wire rod, compared to €540-555/mt CFR and €555-560/mt CFR, respectively, reported previously. By contrast, Turkish suppliers have revised their rebar offers down slightly to €525-545/mt CFR, versus €530-550/mt CFR heard earlier, based on an exchange rate of €1 = $1.17 and estimated freight costs of €25-30/mt.
