Turkish mills are willing to push up their local rebar prices $5-10/mt up, citing higher production costs due to the latest price increase in the import scrap segment. In addition, it seems that the suppliers are expecting some livelier restocking ahead of the Eid holiday.
However, buyers are yet to reveal a positive reaction, partially due to market uncertainty and financial issues prevailing in the country. "If we purchase material at higher prices and are not able to generate cash, then we will have to face costlier repayment conditions to the banks," a source told SteelOrbis. Even if local buyers accept higher rebar prices, they still need to pay VAT as the month is about to end, while also facing stocking costs during the Eid holiday.
Turkish official domestic dollar-based rebar offers in the Marmara region have settled at $610-615/mt ex-works, $5/mt up over the week. In the Izmir region, one of the mills has set its official rebar price at TRY 32,500/mt ($594/mt) ex-works, up by TRY 300/mt ($4/mt); another mill is standing at TRY 32,250/mt ($590/mt) ex-works. Sources report even TRY 31,895-32,090 /mt ($585-587/mt) ex-works is possible Izmir region, but for cash payments only.
One of the key players in the Iskenderun region has maintained the official price at TRY 32,500/mt, but in US dollars the offer lost $2/mt to $594/mt ex-works. Sources report that several Iskenderun-based rolling mills have set their rebar prices today, for serious buyers and cash payments, at TRY 32,000-32,100/mt ($585-587/mt) ex-warehouse, up by TRY 100-200/mt while only rising by $2/mt on US dollar basis on the lower end.
Currently, local 12 mm rebar prices in the spot market in Turkey are in the range of TRY 32,100-33,100/mt ($587-605/mt) ex-warehouse, up by TRY 200-400/mt ($2-5/mt). Only rebar spot prices in the Izmir region have remained flat in the local currency with minor changes on US dollar basis due to the aggressive pricing policy in order to generate cash.
