During the week ending August 7, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have increased, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, rebar futures prices at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) have moved up, exerting a positive impact on domestic semi-finished steel prices. Meanwhile, blast furnace capacity utilization rates have decreased a little, easing the pressure from the supply side. However, demand from downstream users has also slackened. Currently, production restrictions due to environmental protection measures are still being implemented, which will bolster semi-finished steel prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move up in the coming week.
