Prices in the European longs market have continued to come under upward pressure this week, following the trend that began last week.
In the local rebar market in Italy, new prices have been reported at around €400-410/mt ex-works base (€660-670/mt ex-works including regular extras), confirming and even exceeding increase attempts of €20/mt that producers had made at the end of last week, showing an overall increase of €40-50/mt compared to previous levels. According to an Italian producer, while still experiencing structural demand weakness - with a better scenario in southern Italy compared to the north - customers are starting to raise their stock levels, fearing further price upticks. On the contrary, according to some traders’ reports, orders concluded at previous levels (lower by about €100/mt) have still to be delivered. As a result, "they [customers] will now wait and see before buying at these [higher] price levels," one trader reported.
As for the rebar market in Germany, two of the main mills are reporting difficulties in delivering their current orders, and customers are reluctant to accept the requested price increases. However, sellers are convinced that prices will continue to rise. In Poland, rebar prices also registered increases of around €15/mt on the upper end of the range, standing at €620-645/mt CPT, with "deals closed sporadically", a source said.
Also in Poland, wire rod prices have been reported at €660/mt CPT, but, according to sources, sellers have also requested up to €685-700/mt CPT. However, these levels have been assessed as too high for the market.
Wire rod prices in Italy, on the other hand, have risen by about €5/mt compared to last week’s prices, exceeding producers’ target prices and settling at €675-685/mt delivered for drawing quality. As for mesh-quality wire rod, on the other hand, the range is standing at around €640-650/mt delivered. In eastern Europe, prices for the same quality have been reported at around €660-670/mt delivered.
In export markets, especially form Greece, further increases of around €20/mt week on week have been reported for both rebar and wire rod. The new levels are therefore standing at €630/mt FOB for rebar and €625/mt FOB for wire rod. FOB prices of around €620-625/mt have also been reported from Italy, but not all producers are offering for this segment. Export prices for rebar from Spain to Irish and UK ports have remained stable week on week at €670/mt FOB.
Finally, on the import side, rebar and wire rod prices from Turkey have been reported at around €560–570/mt CFR and around €570–580/mt CFR, respectively. Compared to the previous week, price increases have been recorded at €10/mt for both products. Egyptian offers have instead been reported at €555-560/mt CFR for rebar and at €560-570/mt CFR for wire rod. Price increases of €5/mt have materialized for both rebar and wire rod, confirming last week’s rumors.
