The downward movement of import scrap prices in Turkey which had started in the third week of September was replaced by upward price movement in the middle of last week. Although domestic wire rod prices in Turkey were until yesterday expected to increase in line with the rises recorded in import scrap prices, the uncertainties caused by the sharp depreciation of the Turkish lira against the US dollar and also by the declines recorded in Chinese suppliers’ finished steel quotations after they returned from their long holiday (October 1-8) have caused Turkish buyers to be in no rush to conclude new deals. As a result, demand in the local Turkish wire rod market is currently at low levels. Meanwhile, domestic wire rod prices in Turkey have mostly remained stable over the past week.
