Chinese domestic steel section prices up slightly amid fluctuations

In the past week, Chinese domestic steel section prices first increased and then declined, with prices now slightly higher week on week.

In the past week, Chinese domestic steel section prices first increased and then declined, with prices now slightly higher week on week.

As for billet, prices of the semi-finished steel product in the Chinese domestic market have indicated a downward trend during the past seven days. In Tangshan, the current price of Q235 150 mm x 150 mm square billet is at RMB 5,170/mt ($800/mt), the price of 165 mm x 225 mm rectangular billet stands at RMB 5,190/mt ($803/mt), while the price of 20MnSi billet is at around RMB 5,270/mt ($815/mt). The prices are all ex-mill, including 13 percent VAT.

Overall trading activity in the Chinese steel section market has been at a low level due to the off-season, floods in certain areas and the coronavirus issue. Production volumes has still low, providing some support for steel section prices. Lately the, futures markets for steel and raw materials have declined sharply, causing steel section prices to move back down. As for the week ahead, considering the weakness of the demand side and the recent decline in raw material prices, it is believed that steel section may decrease.
