It’s been about two months since the Trump administration announced that Canada and Mexico would not receive exemptions for the Section 232 tariff, and the most recent data from the US Department of Commerce shows that license data for US import hot dipped galvanized coil from both of those countries seems to be down markedly from May.
For the month of May, census data indicates the US imported 97,516 mt of HDG coil from Canada and 9,779 mt from Mexico; for the month of July, license data shows that Canadian imports at 59,262 mt and Mexican imports at 4,164 mt, reflecting a combined decline of nearly 20 percent from May to July. Russia, which accounted for 45,563 mt (census data) of HDG coil imports to the US in April, hasn’t shipped anything to the US since.
SteelOrbis sources say that much of this relates to concern about stocking inventory, since it’s still widely held that prices in the domestic market will begin to decline during the late 3rd and 4th quarter of the current year.
