Order activity and inquiries for US import HDG and Galvalume markets have remained steady in the past two weeks, with traders noting that still-rising US domestic prices continue to spur interest in booking offshore. Traders have also said that planned maintenance outages at three US sheet mills (Cleveland Cliffs has idled it’s No. 7 blast furnace at Indiana Harbor East through Oct. 15, US Steel’s Gary Works has a 38-day planned blast furnace outage that’s set to start in late September, and Nucor’s 25-28 day outage at its Gallatin, Kentucky plant will start in November) which are happening between now and mid-November, are expected to keep supplies of domestic steel “tighter than buyers would like,” which is also helping bloster interest in booking imported material.
