US import HDG prices steady after last week’s uptick

Sources close to SteelOrbis have confirmed that spot market prices for US import HDG and Galvalume have remained stable, week-over-week, but many question how long current price points will last.

“We expect to see higher prices in the upcoming days,” one trader source said. “Global demand is still incredibly strong and buyers aren’t being deterred by mills’ prices.”  And despite the current, record-high import pricing, offshore offers are still roughly $6 cwt. ($132/mt or $120/nt) cheaper than domestic for 0.012” G30 coil, and roughly $5 cwt. ($110/mt or $100/nt) cheaper than domestic for 019 Gr80/AZ55 coil. As such, many buyers feel that locking in offshore tons, at today’s prices, will give them a marked cost advantage over domestic prices (which many assume will continue to rise into Q4) once their import tons arrive.

This week’s prices are listed in the chart below.

UAE, South Africa, and Vietnam $99+ $2,183/mt  $1,980/nt $99+ DDP loaded truck in US Gulf ports
