The most commonly reported spot price transaction range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil have once again held neutral; spot market prices have been unchanged since the Memorial Day holiday. Base-price HDG prices continue to be heard in the approximate range $41-$42 cwt. ($904-$926/mt or $820-$840/nt) ex-Midwest mill.
And while some within the US steel market have expressed concern that the annual “summer doldrums,” which have historically led to dips in order activity, could leave flat rolled steel spot market prices vulnerable to correction, others feel the lack of availability of imports will help keep HDG spot market prices steady.
“This is a self-perpetuating market at this point,” one Texas-based source said. “No one wants to stock up because they’re afraid prices will slide back. People are only buying what they need, and because people are only buying what they need, they’re going back [to the mills] more often. The lack of stocked inventory is helping keep this thing going.”
