US HDG prices keep inching upward

Spot market prices within the US domestic HDG market have firmed since our last report a week ago, as higher scrap prices coupled with last month’s winter storms have placed pressure on the market.

“As long as everyone agrees to keep paying these crazy prices, mills have all the reason in the world to keep pushing prices up,” a source said. “Imagine you’re a mill rep who has nothing to sell today, but because I’m a nice guy, you agree to give me 100 tons if I pay $5 cwt. above the normal market.  Then boom—that price gets reported and it’s going to be the new contract pricing next month. It’s wild.”

Other sources agree that prices are “out of control.”
