Spot market prices for US domestic hot dipped galvanized and Galvalume coil have inched up by $0.50 cwt. ($11/mt or $10/nt) since our last report a week ago. The upward price momentum is linked to the second price increase announcement since the first of the year, released out by US flat rolled steel mills late last month.
While some believed that mills would have a hard time selling the price increase, especially since scrap is currently trading at sideways (prices are expected to settle during the early part of this week, with the expectation that prices will settle at sideways), others note that US domestic flats mills continue to have the upper hand in terms of supply, as import arrivals are expected to be depressed throughout the first and most of the second quarter.
