US domestic HDG prices have once again jumped upward since our last report a week ago. Sources close to SteelOrbis say the market is still supply-driven, adding that spot market tons are scarce. “The range of what people are paying is pretty big,” a source said. “If you have a contract, sure can get HDG coil for under $65 cwt. ($1,433/mt or $1,300/nt), FOB mill, but if you don’t have a contract, you’re absolutely paying in the high $60s, and that’s only if you can find spot tons that are available.”
A second source agrees that prices are high but said that at the rate that prices are climbing, he expects the mills will start seeing some pushback. “No one can afford to credit their customers more than a few truck loads. This isn’t sustainable. Nothing in this business lasts forever and for now, the mills are being ridiculous.”
