Activity within the US domestic HDG market may have been lacking in the past two weeks, but sources close to SteelOrbis have indicated that hasn’t stopped prices from climbing upward. Prices are up by approximately $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) since mid-December, although based on scrap trading upward this month, at approximately up $30/gt ($30/mt) as of this morning, it’s widely speculated that mills may try to push for yet another price increase once scrap settles. However, sources close to SteelOrbis note that any additional flat rolled steel price increases may be short lived, due to lagging end-use demand.
Scrap is expected to settle later this week.
