US domestic coated flat steel prices have continued to inch upward since our last report a week ago, yet while prices have firmed, the spot market transaction range is still below mills’ desired price points.
“The mills are trying to push for $40 cwt. ($882/mt or $800/nt) ex-mill for base HDG but the market definitely isn’t there yet,” a source said. “The market is a bit difficult to read these days. Prices are clearly firming, yet the gap between deal, contract tonnage and true spot pricing is all over the place. There are also some transactions that are taking place above and below the average range.”
