Although US domestic flats mills announced a $3.00 cwt. ($66/mt or $60/nt) price increase yesterday, sources tell SteelOrbis that while it’s too soon for the increase to absorb into new order prices, spot offers are expected to rise.
At the very least, the latest increase has bolstered the $2.00 cwt. ($44/mt or $40/nt) price increase announced in late August, but sources tell SteelOrbis that the uptrend is based more on inventory restocking over the last two weeks than a surge in demand, and with capacity utilization continuing to rise, the chances of higher prices lasting through the rest of the year are slim.
For now, US domestic HDG and Galvalume prices are stable, although upticks are expected within the next week:
