Turkish coated steel prices rise again amid positive fundamentals

Turkey’s coated flat steel prices have indicated a significant rise over the past week with the support of rising feedstock prices and the limited allocation in the market. Demand has recovered, mainly as buyers believe producers have rather solid support for increasing their coated steel prices to a new high.

Some re-rollers have announced their prices just this morning, February 23, opening new sales at significantly higher levels, which created some confusion among buyers. "We understand that buyers are hesitating to purchase at the new prices, but this is how we see the market. Spot offers are $10-20/mt higher than production offers. Buyers want to renew their stocks and many of them want to do so before prices increase again. Also, we are not in a hurry to sell. We are offering for May production," one producer told SteelOrbis.

On the export side, demand has also recovered and some deals were heard at $970-980/mt FOB to the US and the EU last week. However, now these levels are not considered possible. Demand is expected to further recover due to the uptend seen in the flat steel and raw material markets.
