The latest price decrease for coated steel in Turkey has triggered some livelier demand and so local producers have avoided further drops in their official price levels. However, according to sources, in negotiations it is possible to get discounts of up to $10/mt in the local market and up to $20/mt for exports. "During sales and negotiations there are lower prices, but we consider them normal because buyers continue to exert pressure. Buyers expect further decreases in HRC prices due to low local demand and limited exports, and they expect coated steel prices to move accordingly," a re-roller told SteelOrbis.
On the export side, demand is still low due to competitive offers from other exporters in the EU. In other destinations, buyers are cautious given the expectations for a second wave of Covid-19 and mostly buy in small tonnages. "Buyers often choose to buy from their local markets instead of importing because of a possible second wave of Covid-19. Import materials caused lots of trouble at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and nobody wants to experience that again. Also, prices in the target markets are acceptable to buyers and local producers are flexible about their levels as we are, since no one wants to miss any demand," another re-roller told SteelOrbis.
