The June drop-off in both US domestic and export scrap prices have many market players within the US domestic flat rolled steel market, including those involved in buying and selling US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coil, questioning whether the previously-seen run-up on HDG spot prices has finally come to an end.
“Mills would be foolish to try for another price increase at this point because everyone knows that their input costs are down,” one Texas-based source said.
At current, the most commonly reported spot price transaction range has once again trended lateral since our last report a week ago, at approximately $41-$42 cwt. ($904-$926/mt or $820-$840/nt) ex-Midwest mill. Sources close to SteelOrbis continue to report that although the bulk of spot market transactions are taking place toward the top end of that range, deals closer to the bottom are still available for the largest-sized transactions.”
