The European Parliament has reached a provisional agreement on steel safeguard measures this week, announcing a 47 percent reduction in import quotas effective as of July, with out-of-quota tariffs doubled to 50 percent. In addition, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia has officially implemented adjustments to the HPM (Harga Patokan Mineral/Mineral Benchmark Price) formula, resulting in a surge of up to 135 percent in the base price of low-grade nickel ore, which has directly driven up nickel ore procurement costs. At the same time, stainless steel futures prices have moved up, positively affecting prices in the spot market. Moreover, since the Labor Day holiday (May 1-5) is approaching, downstream users may build up inventories, which will provide support for stainless steel prices. It is expected that stainless steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will edge up further in the coming week.
