Demand still weak in local Turkish HDG market

Demand in the local Turkish hot dip galvanized (HDG) market has remained slack in the past week, since buyers are postponing their purchases until after Ramadan. Since expectations for further declines in flat steel prices strengthened as prices have been moving on a downtrend since early May, buyers have been concluding HDG bookings only to meet their immediate needs. With the beginning of Ramadan in early June, trading activity in the market slowed down significantly but is expected to recover slightly after the end-of-Ramadan holiday. In these circumstances, prices of 0.5 mm HDG in the Turkish market have decreased by $10/mt on the lower end week on week, while discounts are still available depending on buyer and tonnage.

Domestic producers’ HDG prices in the local Turkish market are currently as follows:

Product

Price ($/mt)

Change ($/mt)

HDG   0.50 mm  100gr/m²

590-630

-10 (from the low end)

HDG   1 mm  100gr/m²

530-560

-

HDG   2 mm  100gr/m²

500-525

-

The above prices, which may differ depending on product quality, are ex-works, exclude VAT, and are for advance payments.

Meanwhile, demand for Turkish producers’ HDG is also slack in the export markets, while Turkish producers’ HDG export prices have decreased by $10/mt to $590-640/mt FOB during the past week.
