Wheeling Pittsburgh’s new device leads cost savings

According to statement released by Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation, the company started using a new metallic heat exchanger on its No.1 blast furnace in April, which is worth $4 million. The new heat exchanger, which pre-heats blast gas in the blast furnace is expected to reduce use of coke by around 3'000 tons monthly. It is stated that, this device, which uses excess blast gas to heat the blast gas in the furnace is used for the first time in steel industry. Through this device, reduction in coke usage will enable the company to make cost-savings, especially at a time when coke prices are very high.
