Brazilian miner and iron ore producer Vale increased the risk level of its Sul Inferior dam, located at its Gongo Soco mine in Minas Gerais state, the company said.

Vale increased the risk level of the dam to two, in a scale from one to three in which the higher the level, the more likely a dam is to collapse.

Vale said heavy rains caused an erosion in the internal reservoir of the structure. The structure, however, remains stable.

The miner evacuated all people living near the dam. A nearby dam, the Sul Superior dam, is currently at level three, Vale said.
