Ontario, Canada-based US Steel Canada Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation, announced on April 16 that United Steelworkers (USW) Local Union 8782 has ratified a new three-year labor contract for employees at US Steel Canada's Lake Erie Plant.

"We are pleased that the Lake Erie Plant employees represented by United Steelworkers Local Union 8782 have ratified a new three-year contract," said US Steel Canada president David J. Rintoul.  "Most significantly, the agreement mitigates the issue of the underfunded defined benefit pension plan by closing that plan to new entrants," he added.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, Lake Erie Works employees were locked out by US Steel on August 3, 2009. The lockout followed the layoff of about 800 workers from the same facility in March 2009. A tentative agreement was recently reached between the negotiating teams.
